Alfred Ernest's known siblings

In 1915, at the age of 16, Alfred was a Railway worker, employed as a cleaner, and was a member of the West Hartlepool 1 branch of the National Union of Railwaymen.

Alfred Ernest was a private in the Manchester Regiment, Service No: 50871, and served with the 2nd/10th Battalion in Belgium. He was killed in action. His parents at the time were living at 15, Alston St., West Hartlepool

In 1914 the Commonwealth forces, mainly Naval forces, attempted to defend the Belgian Coast and Antwerp, but were forced to retreat. Commonwealth forces did not return to this part of the line until June 1917, when XV corps relieved French troops in the sector from St Georges (now Sint Joris) to the sea. They saw particularly fierce fighting at Nieuport (now Nieuwpoort) in July, before handing the sector back to the French in November 1917. Alfred Ernest was killed in the September as part of this action, and is one of the soldiers commemorated at the Nieuport Memorial to those who died during these months.

He was 19 years old
