Mary appears to have parted from James Goodway, as there is no father entered on either of the two children's birth certificates, and they are registered in her maiden name. Hannah and Wilhelmina also adopted the surname Goodway when they were in the Bishop Auckland Union Workhouse alongside Elizabeth. It is assumed that by this time (the 1881 census) Mary had died.
